OK. Enough is enough. Over the last couple of months, especially since the PM communication channel has been turned off after spam was being sent, it's become clear that some new members are just here to mess about and to post pointless messages. Andrei and Youri have been very prompt to delete those posts, but the latest stupidity demonstrated by Lagmaphasia shows that things could easily get much, much worse with multiple 'Hi, I'm new' posts flooding the forum for no other reason than to be daft.

Surely, the answer is simple --- to really tighten up on registration procedures and for all new members to have to be authorised by the admin team before being allowed to post.

I've commented before about what happened with 'The Write Idea' forum which also used the phpBB template. That forum was nearly taken down by 'members' with malicious intent, but the problem was solved by changing the registration systems. (Not quite sure what they did, but the forum has been clean ever since). Maybe it was the following idea .....

It's very common practice for forum administrators to not let the first few messages be posted until they've been checked. Once a member has proven their genuine interest and positive intention by posting relevant messages, they are then allowed to post without further need for checking. The BBC use this system for all their forums and several animation and guitar forums do the same. It seems to be a very simple system for filtering out the fools.

I've done some checking.

A common system is for administrators to monitor the first 3 or 4 posts by newly registered members of forums with messages of the 'Hello I'm new here' type NOT being counted as valid, although they are accepted as long as they are posted into the correct thread. Those first few messages are usually not published in the forum until they have been scrutinised and approved. This isn't censorship - just sensible monitoring to ensure that new members' posts are relevant to the forum and reflect genuine queries, suggestions, responses etc. as a way of proving that new members are actually using the software or participating in whatever activities the forum supports.

After that initial period, if problems arise, existing members are provided with the means to flag irrelevant posts.

Hope that helps. It sounds like a very sensible and manageable system.
