On the top system level XP has avifil32.dll, but I'm afraid that simple replacing the file may not help because this dll uses a lot of other kernel system libraries and drivers. I suppose you need first to clean your system from malicious programs. I don't know about sherlock & scannow, but eg. AVG is good enough and it's freeware. Safe mode is prefered of course for scanning anyway.

Andrei is right ... AVG is first class. I used the freeware version for a couple of years and it performed without fault.

I then took the plunge and registered it to get full coverage. The free version is very, very good, but the registered version is phenomenal and in the last 3 years has caught absolutely anything and everything that came my way. It also flags up any suspect sites when you're browsing.

In the past, I've also found that a good registry cleaner can help speed my computer up or sort out some problems --- but you have to be careful using those things and ALWAYS back up key data before using one.

I do run avg free every day and it is showing 0 threats and has been throughout this.I have a suspicion that a software download added/ removed/ broke an avi module,I think I know which download it was.Incidentally I couldn' t system restore to before the download the system restore calender wouldn't let me choose a prior date.Ihave a list of the avi modules in my system avicap32.dll 63KB 18/08/01 12.00
avicap.dll 68KB \"
avifil32.dll 83KB \"
modified 10/06/09 14.13
avifile.dll 106KB 18/08/01 12.00
avisynth.dll 364KB 03/02/09 12.09
modified 27/09/09 09.39
